(Oh, yes! 2024 is the year of the dragon)

The Southern Appalachians offer the most ravishing scenery in eastern North America. Here you’ll find one of the country’s greatest and most challenging drives. The drive refers to the incredibly serpentine 11-ish miles of U.S. 129 between Deals Gap, on the Tennessee-North Carolina line, and the Tabcat Creek Bridge at Chilhowee Lake in Tennessee. More than 300 turns in 11 miles. In terms of natural geography, the Tail of the Dragon tracks reservoirs of the Little Tennessee River, namely Cheoah and Calderwood lakes. The river way traverses the seam between the Great Smoky Mountains to the north and the Unicoi Mountains to the south, some of the highest, rugged, and scenic ranges of the Southern Appalachians. The Tail of the Dragon edges Great Smoky Mountains National Park and the Cherokee National Forest.

Convene at Hunter Volvo (Asheville) at 8:30 am in the front parking area.  From there we’ll drive the dragon in flights of 4-5 cars, have lunch along a branch of the Tennessee River. Afterward make our way to the West Tubing Company (Brasstown, NC) and dine alongside the river whilst tubers shoot the rapids.

Bring your family, grandkids swimming togs (water is chilly) and a jacket. Bluegrass music by a local band is not uncommon at the Tubing Company. So come and relax. I know I will.

RSVPs required. RSVP the Tail    What do you think you’ll be piloting. Of course I’ll have my tools and, if necessary, Dave West (co Chapter Leader) can arrange a tow and supply parts as needed.
